Disconnect to Reconnect
Take a River Trip – Disconnect to Reconnect
We are connected in today’s world, stuck in a barrage of texts, social media, email and the internet that demands constant attention. We operate 24/7 on information overload and it shows: our tech-hungry population is distracted and overwhelmed. It is time: disconnect to reconnect with loved ones and the world around you.
Consider this: if your head is always down, you miss what is going on in the world around you. If you clear your life of distractions periodically, you become a better partner, parent, business owner, employee and friend.
We not only need a break, we need to recharge our lives on a regular basis. How? Reconnecting with nature, family and friends can give us the much needed down time to invigorate our senses, feed our spirits, nurture our relationships and provide rest to our over-stimulated brains.
Take a Sabbatical
What if you took a week long sabbatical from your smart phone, computer or tablet? What would that look like?
For me, it would be a week long excursion down the Salmon River. You end up turning the phone off once you hit the launch site since it stopped receiving a signal about 56 miles back. Freedom… no phone calls, no email, no news feed = bliss.
Spending time in nature allows us to use our senses to discover the world around us and the one within. It gives us time to reflect and enjoy simple pleasures. We are free to learn something new or reacquaint ourselves with a skill we had overlooked for too long, maybe even get in touch with the child inside so that play is not so foreign to us anymore.
It might take a day or two to feel the stress wash away but it always does. Above all, the more often you plug into nature, the shorter time it takes to reconnect with your companions and environment. It is a phenomenon that we call ‘river time’ and is easy to spot – relaxed, stress-free faces and no concern for what time it is – that is, unless it is time to eat…
The drawback? Time seems to speed by and as a result, our vacation from technology is over far too soon.
The lasting effects? Most importantly, you walk away refreshed, invigorated and ready to tackle whatever the world throws your way. The memories of moonlit nights spent around a campfire and the morning smell of fresh coffee that makes you peak your head out of your tent in time to watch the sun break over the canyon rim – priceless.
