Course materials are provided, but it is advisable to bring:

• A few pens or pencils
• A notebook
• Clothing for variable weather (more information below)
• Food and a water bottle (more information below)
• Sunscreen
• Sunglasses

The course will consist of a mix of indoor classroom learning, and outdoor sessions and scenarios. These courses take place in the spring in the central Idaho mountains when weather can be variable. Plan ahead by looking at an extended weather forecast and plan on bringing:

• Comfortable clothing for indoor sessions
• Clothing for variable weather conditions, including
• Sturdy footwear (hiking boots, snow boots)
• Water resistant outerwear – pants and jacket
• Warm layers (fleece, down, thermal base layer)
• Lightweight, breathable clothing if the weather is warm – pants and top
• Appropriate headwear (winter hat, sun hat)

Food is not provided, but there are places to fill water bottles.
Course days run around 8 hours, so plan on bringing a lunch and enough snacks to last you the day.

There are a couple options for groceries and snacks in Cascade if you need to resupply.

There will be multiple, short bathroom/snack/stretch breaks throughout the day, and a one hour lunch break during which you can drive to Cascade for food or other supplies if needed, or squeeze in some exercise or relaxation.

Hotels and lodges: There are a handful of hotels and lodging accommodations in and around Cascade with Alpine Lodge, Cascade Lake Inn, Palooza Basecamp, and Hotel NoBo being some of the closest to the Alzar campus. We suggest looking at visitidaho.org to search places to stay.

Designated (Paid) Camping: There are ample opportunities for paid, designated camping in the area. Lake Cascade State Park, Arrowhead Campground, Ridgeview Campground, Big Rock Campground, and Van Wyck Campground are all relatively close to the Alzar Campus.

Dispersed Camping: There are also many places to camp for free on public land around Cascade. Reference “Boise National Forest – Cascade District” maps for dispersed camping on public lands. Please note proximity to Alzar campus when planning your camping arrangements.

The Wilderness First Responder (WFR) course is designed for outdoor professionals and outdoor enthusiasts, preparing them to care for injuries and illness in remote, challenging environments. The course is fast-paced, challenging, hands-on and fun.

The WFR-R course is available to individuals who have previously completed a full 72 hour WFR course.

WFR certification is valid for 2 years from the date of completion of either a WFR or WFR-R. Likewise, there is a one year grace period for recertification. If a WFR-R course is not completed within your 1-year grace period, you will be required to complete the full course again.
