July 4th Scenic Float
July 4th Scenic Float in Salmon, Idaho
Typically, on 4th of July weekend you will see lots of rafts and kayaks on the Salmon River near Salmon – not so this 4th. The combination of a large snowpack, late spring, lots of rain and cooler temperatures has kept the river high for a lot longer than most years. So, we had the river to ourselves on our July 4th scenic float.
The paddleboat was the perfect vehicle to get up close to the water but not sit in it like you would in an inflatable kayak – the water was just too cold and fast for fun yaks. And fast it was – the ten mile trip took about one hour and 15 minutes – a record in recent years. We only had to paddle to miss obstacles and put in and out.
The view of the Continental Divide was spectacular – it is not often that we see snow up there on the 4th of July. Its south face melts pretty quickly once the weather warms up.
